JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (Aug. 19, 2026) — The agenda for the previously scheduled Aug. 31 Washington County Commission meeting will include the determination of the result of the tied election between incumbent Ken Huffine and challenger Cindy Humphrey in the race for the board’s District 13 seat.

Following the Aug. 6 general election, both candidates received 507 votes. Per the statutory framework outlined in Tennessee Code Annotated § 2-8-111, the county legislative body is responsible for determining the election result when a tie occurs in a county or civil district office. Under this statute, the commission may resolve the deadlock by casting a deciding vote or by adopting a resolution to call a special runoff election.

“Our primary commitment is to ensure that the commission fulfills its legal obligation in determining the result of this tie vote in a manner that is fair, transparent and strictly compliant with state law,” said Washington County Commission Chairman Greg Matherly.

Chairman Matherly confirmed that the County Attorney has provided the requested legal advice and counsel, and that the full memorandum will be published in advance of the meeting, along with the agenda, on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

The Aug. 31 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in Courtroom 7 of the George P. Jaynes Justice Center, located at 108 W. Jackson Blvd. in Jonesborough. The meetings are streamed on the county’s YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/@WashingtonCountyTNGovernment.
